The parent class we offer focuses on helping parents of children age 4-18 with ADHD and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (or symptoms of). It is a 5-session class that meets every other week at a time that works for the client and facilitator. This program is offered in individual and small group settings. When applicable, it is preferable (but not required) that both parents attend; however when it is not possible, to achieve best outcomes, all primary caregivers involved should be willing to implement our strategies. The cost of the class is $400.00. Insurance is not billed for this program.
The text we use in conjunction with the program content is: Transforming the Difficult Child Workbook – An Interactive Guide to the Nurtured Heart Approach by Howard Glasser and Lisa Bravo. (This is the copy with a large red heart on the cover – this is NOT the newer edition entitled Transforming the Intense Child Workbook).
We have offered this parent class for over 12 years, previously in a group setting facilitated by Dr. William Benninger and Tracy Lowrie. Since Dr. Bill’s retirement, the group has been continually offered and led on an individual and small group basis by Tracy. We have found it to promote excellent progress with the families that implement its strategies enthusiastically.
Parenting a child with oppositional symptoms needs to be different than parenting a typical child. The different parenting strategies are not hard to understand, but need practice to be implemented consistently. The average improvement for their child’s behavior as reported by the parents who have completed the group from the beginning to the end of the group is about 63%.
If you’d like to sign up or have questions about if this class fits your family’s needs, we will schedule a brief phone call to ensure your situation is a good fit for the program.
