Many people with ADHD know what they need to do, but have trouble doing what they know.
If you, or your child are struggling with symptoms of ADHD or executive dysfunction, coaching can provide individualized and practical support. Several studies have shown that executive function coaching can improve the symptoms of ADHD. For example, a study published in the "Journal of Attention Disorders" in 2010 found that college students with ADHD who received EF coaching showed significant improvements in self-regulation, goal-directed behavior, and practical problem-solving skills.
ADHD/EF coaching can help with a wide variety of challenges that can include (but not limited to):
Self-Awareness: The ability to be aware of one's behavior, how it affects oneself and others, how it affects decisions.
Inhibition: The ability to not act on things immediately. The opposite of impulsivity.
Non-Verbal Working Memory: The ability to hold pictures, sounds, and other senses in your head to help with learning and not making repeated mistakes. One can foresee consequences.
Verbal Working Memory: The ability to self-talk to solve problems, make plans, and be flexible.
Emotional Regulation: The ability to control our emotions in socially acceptable ways and help us control our reactions to the environment.
Self Motivation: The ability to motivate oneself with internal and/or external rewards
Planning/Problem Solving: The ability to manipulate information, organize, think on one’s feet.
Initiate, task monitoring and organization of materials: The ability to start a project, break it down, check progress along the way and stay organized.
ADHD/EF Coaching can help adults, adolescents and parents of younger children with ADHD, working memory deficits, and/or executive dysfunction
